LOCAL GOVERNMENT CASE STUDY: |
PASQUOTANK COUNTY -
COMMERCIAL RECYCLING |
Since 1995, Pasquotank County’s Solid Waste Department has offered recycling services to businesses in the community. The service is free and includes either a 96- or 105-gallon rolling bin and transports the materials. Businesses, including ABC permit holders, can take advantage of the container or office paper recycling programs. The types of containers collected include No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, aluminum and steel cans. A separate container is provided for mixed glass bottles. The county accepts newspapers, magazines and an “office mix” of copy and fax paper, white envelopes, cards and pamphlets, file folders and shredded paper for the paper program.
Because it has a limited number of bins available and in the interest of efficiency, the county recommends that area businesses clustered together share recycling bins. The collected recyclable containers are then given to a local processor for export. Paper is marketed through a processor in southeastern Virginia.
Pasquotank County uses two staff and three trucks to run the program, which serves 250 businesses (117 fiber and 133 container). The approximate cost of the program in FY2005 was $55,000. Program revenues of $8,000 helped cover service expenses.
