Stanly County began its oil filter recycling program in 2001 as an integral part of the county’s waste oil recovery program.

To facilitate the collection of automotive oil filters, Stanly County has developed a filter collection site at each of the county’s nine convenience centers. The collection container at these sites consists of one 55-gallon metal drum with a lid to protect the contents from the weather. Around the drum, the county has constructed a cinderblock catch basin to prevent any oil that may leak out of the drum from contaminating the surrounding soil. Each site has a sign measuring 18” by 24” that designates the drum as an oil filter recycling container.

Stanly County’s oil filter collection program is contracted through U.S. Filter Recovery, based in Concord. The company provides pick-up services for the oil and filters; however, the county supplies its own covered collection containers.

The county is paying $85 per drum for pick-up services. During the 2004-05 fiscal year, Stanly County collected nine, 55-gallon drums of uncrushed oil filters, each weighing an average of 275 pounds. The total weight for this annual recovery was approximately 2,500 pounds and the collection cost was $765.
