Duplin County began offering pallet recycling services to the public at its transfer station in November 2005. The county uses a 40-yard container, previously used to haul garbage, to collect the pallets at the designated site. Customers are asked to stack the pallets in the county’s box. Once the box is full, Duplin County transports it to Parker Bark Company, a mulch producer located about five miles away. Parker Bark then grinds and colors the material for mulch.

Hauling costs for the county are about $80 per load and Parker Bark accepts the material for free. Approximately $40 was spent on the sign at the transfer station. Operational costs are minimal, as staff is used only occasionally to push stray pallets back in the box with a forklift.

In the first three months of the pallet recycling program, the county has already shipped two loads of pallets, or approximately three tons, for recycling.
