Description
Orange County has a variety of events across the county that offer recycling services to those in attendance. The Orange County Hog Days Festival has been recycling since 2000 and has implemented some exciting and progressive initiatives. At each event, plastic, aluminum, glass and cardboard are recycled. |

Implementation
During the festival, Orange County distributes as many as 50 bins throughout the event grounds. During the event, staff on hand monitors the recycling containers and trash receptacles to ensure there is no contamination and that all eligible items are being recycled. When the bins are full, rovers will circulate the grounds with 95-gallon roll carts to collect the accumulated and uncontaminated recyclables. A box truck is used at the central location for the accumulated products. Orange County has a small processing facility which takes the recyclable material and processes it.
Results
At the 2008 event, more than two tons of food and paper waste was diverted from the cookers and the trash-sorting stations. Rovers collected ten full 90-gallon carts of mostly plastic bottles mixed with some cans, one 90-gallon cart of lemonade cups and about ½ cubic yard of aluminum pans. Approximately 5,000 plastic bottles, 250 plastic cups and 25 pounds of aluminum were recycled from Hog Day and brought to the Orange County Landfill for processing. This exceeded the previous year’s collection by about 1,000 bottles. |
