EVENT/VENUE RECYCLING CASE STUDY:
RBC CENTER, RALEIGH

Recycling Since: 2008
Type of Facility: Indoor coliseum
Serves: Seats 19,722 for basketball or 18,680 for ice hockey
Recycles: glass, plastic, aluminum

Description
The RBC Center is a large fixed-use indoor stadium located in Raleigh, N.C. The RBC center is home to the state NHL hockey league, Carolina Hurricanes; however, when not being utilized for this purpose the venue is actively sought after for a variety of other events including hosting N.C. State University Men’s Basketball games and concerts.

Implementation
The coliseum recently stepped up its efforts to actively recycle the products that are consumed by patrons visiting the facility. The venue has consistently been active in educating its patrons on the importance of recycling initiatives through actively engaging in the behavior. A large amount of recycling receptacles are placed throughout the facility with special attention paid to ensuring that there is placement next to trash containers so that a patron always has the option of recycling their products.

Results
To date the facility has diverted more than six tons of glass, plastic and aluminum from the landfill.  A slight learning curve exists through both the employee effort and the patron participation. Some staff still mix the trash and recyclables and have to be reminded by management of the appropriate protocol when dealing with these products. Additionally, patrons sometimes put a recyclable item in the trash when there is a recycling bin placed right next to the trash for the individual to use.
