Material Recovery and Processing Facilities
A designated facility designed to handle and process recycled materials can greatly increase the
efficiency of local recycling efforts. Both material recovery facilities (MRFs) and processing centers
are designed to accept recyclable materials after they are collected. MRFs are facilities designed for
manual and mechanized sorting and processing of a mixed stream of commingled recyclable materials.
Processing centers handle collected materials already separated by type.
MRFs and processing centers can make it possible for local governments to expand recycling collections,
accommodate increased recycling efforts in the county, and increase revenue from the sale of the recycled
materials.
