Organics Recycling and Compost

Organic materials such as food waste, woody debris and yard waste make up a large portion of the waste stream. In addition to taking up space in the landfill, the decomposition of organics can lead to an increase in methane (greenhouse gas) production. However, these materials can be diverted from the waste stream. Organics recycling, or composting, helps turn organic waste into value-added products. A variety of local government programs can help to reduce organic waste such as backyard composting, food diversion programs, and landfill bans on wood waste.
