Paint Reuse & Recovery Programs
Since most paints contain many harmful chemicals, paint is considered a
household hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of in regular landfills in
North Carolina. In addition to environmental risks, household hazardous
wastes are a significant burden on local governments' budgets. Since the
disposal of paint and other household hazardous wastes must be done carefully
and under strict regulations, the programs may be expensive to operate. To
mitigate some of the program costs and to minimize the amount of paints sent to
disposal, many communities are developing recovery and swap
programs.
