On May 31, 2007 top management and environmental representatives from organizations recognized as Environmental Stewards in the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Environmental Stewardship Initiative met with Secretary William G. Ross Jr. for the second annual Steward Forum. Representatives from Novozymes North America Inc., Franklinton (2002); ASMO North Carolina Inc., Statesville (2003); City of Gastonia Long Creek Resource Recovery Facility (2004); Corning - Wilmington Fiber Optical Facility (2004); Fleet Readiness Center East, formerly Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point (2004); and GKN Driveline - Sanford Precision Forming Facility (2005) met with the Secretary to discuss the Environmental Stewardship Initiative.

The meeting was held at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Headquarters, Centennial Campus – NCSU. The topics discussed included early public input into environmental policy and planning, steward accountability in other areas of sustainability besides environment (social, economic), future environmental issues stewards need to get ready for now, and effective strategies for dealing with global climate change.

An Environmental Steward is the highest level of membership in ESI and is intended to recognize organizations that demonstrate aggressive environmental performance goals, beyond compliance activities, a mature environmental management system that is integrated into core business functions and processes to communicate with the local community on environmental activities.
