The N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance received funding through EPA’s Region 4 Regional Environmental Priorities Grant to develop a simplified environmental management system template and guidance document. DPPEA has been working with pork producers to develop EMSs since 2001 and determined that a certified EMS is not what most producers need or want for their operation. Most prefer a simplified version of an EMS or to use only portions of the EMS to improve their environmental performance and operational efficiency. This grant enabled DPPEA to create a simplified EMS, guidance documents and other resources for producers to use to develop and implement a simplified EMS. Additionally, workshop materials and guidance were created to help technical assistance providers who provide training for pork producers.
DPPEA also created and manages the Pork Tool. This tool walks a producer through creating an extensive certifiable EMS. The simplified EMS incorporates information from the Pork Tool but simplifies it to a more manageable and user-friendly format for the average producer. If a producer is interested in creating a more extensive EMS, please refer to the Pork Tool or if needing EMS or pork production related information, please refer to the DPPEA pork production page.
