Experienced Staff
The Local Government Technical Assistance Group is a unique team of analysts with solid waste and recycling backgrounds in both the public and private sectors. Their knowledge and experience enables them to make suggestions to improve overall program performance.

Technical Assistance

  • Assistance in developing education and outreach programs including materials design;
  • Assistance with waste assessment training;
  • Assistance with full-cost accounting, Pay-As-You-Throw, and program efficiencies;
  • Assistance in program start-up and and program design;
  • Assistance in breaking new ground such as working with new business sectors (restaurants, hotels, etc.);
  • Assistance with peer-matching; and
  • Assistance with contract management.

Financial Assistance
The Local Government Team provides financial assistance annually through the Solid Waste Reduction Assistance Grants. These grants are only available to not-for-profit organizations and local governments in North Carolina. Since 1991, more than 200 grants have been awarded, totaling more than $2.5 million in financial assistance. The SWRAG request for proposals is generally distributed between December and February each year.

Training
The local government team also conducts periodic training programs and workshops. Past sessions include:

  • New coordinators training;
  • Conducting a waste assessment;
  • Social Marketing for local recycling programs;
  • Recycling education;
  • Full-cost accounting;
  • Pay-As-You-Throw; and
  • Regionalization
