N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources DPPEA Home Welcome to the North Carolina Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance

Services for Small Business/Industry

The N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA) has a unique staff of engineers and chemists with manufacturing, regulatory and consulting backgrounds. They bring added experience and knowledge from conducting more than 1,000 on-site waste assessments. Their knowledge and experience enables them to make suggestions on possible material substitutions, process improvements, water and chemical conservation, inventory management, preventive maintenance, housekeeping and reuse and recycling opportunities.

Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessments

On-site pollution prevention opportunity assessments are among the services available from the Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA). For over a decade, DPPEA has conducted these assessments for a wide range of North Carolina businesses and industries - from major manufacturers such as textile companies, to health service organizations such as hospitals.  A pollution prevention opportunity assessment addresses air emissions, water pollutants and solid and hazardous wastes. This assessment is a technical and economic evaluation of a facility's options for reducing waste generation and waste management costs.

At the request of the facility, DPPEA staff will spend four to eight hours examining operations and pertinent waste generation data. After the visit, DPPEA will research technologies and management practices that the facility may be able to implement and then draft a summary report that contains the following elements:

  • Summary of costs for waste generation and management
  • Summary of the plant survey, including identification of sources of wastes
  • A listing of pollution prevention practices or technologies the facility may want to consider
  • An economic assessment is provided for each option when possible

Drawing on its experience with helping hundreds of other facilities like yours, DPPEA staff can suggest practical options to help your facility reduce its waste generation, achieve regulatory compliance, and save money as well.

DPPEA is a non-regulatory program. DENR's confidentiality policy states that the regulatory divisions will not seek to obtain information from DPPEA about the compliance status of any individual or company for the purpose of taking enforcement action.

If areas of non-compliance are identified during a site visit, they will be pointed out to facility personnel.

If you would like additional information, contact DPPEA at (919) 715-6500 or (800) 763-0136.
