DENR Highlights Commitment to Sustainability,
Efficiency During N.C. Green 2001 Expo

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will display its commitment to environmental sustainability today as part of the N.C. Green 2001 Expo. DENR is working with 15 other state agencies and the consolidated state university system as part of N.C. Project Green, an interagency alliance organized in 1998 to showcase state government’s progress in implementing projects that promote environmental stewardship, efficiency and cost savings.

DENR Secretary William G. Ross Jr. is a featured speaker at the event, which will also include presentations from Cabinet, Council of State, legislative leaders and the military, including: Rep. Joe Tolson, District 71; Sen. Howard Lee, District 16; Superintendent Mike Ward, Department of Public Instruction; Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; Secretary Gwynn Swinson, Department of Administration; and Col. Addison D. “Tad” Davis IV, Garrison Commander at Fort Bragg.

DENR’s exhibits focus on water conservation, pollution prevention, sustainable forest resources, prevention of water pollution, coastal sustainability, xeriscaping, land management for conservation and open space, surface water, and clearing the air in North Carolina. Sustainability efforts at the Museum of Natural Sciences, state parks and the N.C. Zoo will also be displayed.

The N.C. Green 2001 Expo will take place today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at downtown Raleigh’s Halifax Mall, and will include more than 60 hands-on exhibits (from state agencies, universities and emerging technology providers) highlighting state government's progress in reducing the environmental impacts of its operations. These displays will cover a wide range of topics including energy and water efficiency, environmentally preferable purchasing, "green" buildings, composting, recycling, pollution prevention and sustainable land management.
