4.3.4 Environmental Management Program

The Environmental Management Program is a systematic way of managing an organization’s objectives and targets. The program should focus on continual improvement and address immediate and long-term impacts of a farm’s activities.

Step 1

  • For each of the farm's objective and targets, define the action steps that will be taken to achieve each stated objective and target. Include:

    • responsible parties,

    • timeframes,

    • target date.

See example table of objectives & targets: Objectives & Targets Examples

Step 2

  • Write a procedure that identifies the following:

    • Personnel responsible for developing and maintaining a documented list of objectives and targets. The responsible party within this procedure is often the management representative or the EMS coordinator.

    • Timeframe for reviewing the progress towards these objectives and targets.

See the link below for an example of an objective and targets and environmental management program procedure.

The following form can be used to describe your farms environmental management program.

      • Objectives and Targets and Environmental Management Programs Form

(This procedure and form can be downloaded and customized by replacing the red highlighted areas with the specifics for your farm. You can incorporate your procedure for this element within your EMS manual or maintain it as a separate document. A small farm may decide to incorporate language within the manual that addresses this element as opposed to having separate documents.)
