4.3.2 Legal and Other Requirements
Identifying and keeping up-to-date with legal and other requirements is important to the
implementation and continued improvement of your EMS.
Step 1
-
Write a procedure that describes how you identify any environmental legal and other requirements that are applicable to your farm’s activities. Consider federal, state and local requirements as well as industry codes of practice, agreements and non-regulatory guidelines. This will help develop a process for keeping requirements current and communicated to the appropriate people.
-
Identify the personnel responsible for maintaining access and keeping up to date with legal and other requirements. The responsible party is often the management representative or the EMS coordinator.
Step 2
-
Generate tables listing regulatory and other requirements, record-keeping requirements, and external regulatory inspections. See the links below for an example of a legal & other requirements procedure and related
documents.
Legal & Other Requirements Procedure
(This procedure can be downloaded and customized by replacing the red highlighted areas with the specifics for your farm. You can incorporate your procedure for this element within your EMS manual or maintain it as a separate document. A small farm may decide to incorporate language within the manual that addresses this element as opposed to having separate documents.)
