Medical Waste Incinerator
The construction of the Medical Waste Incinerator is complete and this facility
has started operation. This incinerator utilizes a unique pollution control system
resulting in what is believed to be the cleanest burning unit of its kind. The unit
also uses a heat recovery boiler to capture heat from the incinerator to create
steam, thus reducing the fuel consumption of the steam boilers.
Finally, this project is also being used for teaching and research. East Carolina University received a
grant from the North Carolina Commerce Department to utilize landfill gas to fuel
the unit and provide data on emissions and energy savings. Students will use
this incinerator as a hands-on tool for conducting research and teaching pollution
control.
Building Renovations
- Established a benchmark to add insulation above EPA recommendations
to all re-roofing projects.
- Drafted a renovation policy to replace existing single pane windows with
thermal (double) pane windows when major renovation to a building is
scheduled.
Underutilized Property Purchases
Purchasing underutilized property helps East Carolina University reduce new
construction costs and boosts the city's revitalization efforts.
- Purchased, renovated and occupied the previously vacant Browning
building in downtown Greenville.
- Purchased and scheduled renovation of the vacant Daily Reflector
Building in downtown Greenville.
- Purchased three old homes on 14th Street adjacent to campus.
- Constructed a warehouse on the site of a flooded business. The
warehouse constructed was built elevated above the 500-year flood plain.
- Purchased a flooded laundromat, cleaned the building and the university
is utilizing it as a location for low occupancy office space, storage and staff
parking.
