Waste Minimization

Recycling

  • ECU Recycling collected 958,750 pounds of paper, cardboard and drink
containers during fiscal year 2000-2001. Additionally, 4,000 pounds of white
goods (non-repairable refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.) were taken to
E.C.V.C. for refrigerant reclamation and metal recycling by ECU Moving
Services. Other recycling efforts include 3,800 lbs. of auto batteries,
6,400 lbs of motor oil, 1,300 lbs of used oil filters, and 8,800 lbs of tires.

  • Instead of hauling off all the leaves that drop in the fall and limbs from
trimming/wind damage, we now mulch them and use them as organic
    compost.

  • ECU Transit vehicle repair and maintenance contractors comply with hazardous waste disposal and recycling guidelines for materials such as fuels, oils, tires and painting supplies.

  • ECU Recycling, in conjunction with University Housing, will expand
resident hall recycling this school year. Drink containers, paper,
cardboard and glass will be collected for each of fifteen residence halls.

RecyChem
A program to collect and redistribute over purchased/unused laboratory
chemicals has been introduced through the Hazardous Waste Program this
year.
