Exterior Lighting

Student parking lots were surveyed for potential closure and lighting reduction during summer sessions. One freshman parking lot, the Carol Belk building parking lot, was closed and lighting turned off to conserve electricity over the summer. 

Fluorescent Lamp Exchange

• All housekeeping closets were surveyed to locate old incandescent lighting. Old incandescent lights were replaced with energy efficient fluorescent lamps. Housekeeping is extending their survey to identify other locations within buildings where incandescent lights are in use. Facilities Services will replace these incandescent lights with the energy efficient fluorescent lights where appropriate. 
• Joyner Library administration reduced its hours of operation by 19 hours during summer session. This is expected to save 15 percent in overall energy use in this facility during summer session. 

Other Energy Conservation Activities

• Facilities Services has adopted a hot water temperature standard. This standard established acceptable temperatures for hot water at hand sinks, showerheads and in food and medical facilities. Administrative and academic areas not requiring hot water have had hot water temperatures reduced to save energy previously being used for water heating. In some cases, water heaters were removed from service. 
• University Housing has replaced all standard shower heads in each of its fifteen resident halls with low-flow shower heads. This effectively reduced water consumption from greater than 5 gallon per minute/showers to 2.5 gallon per minute/showers as well as reducing energy needed for water heating. 
• The Brody School of Medicine has installed heat exchange plates in the HVAC cooling towers serving this facility. This unit will allow the chiller to air condition through the heat exchange plates, bypassing the HVAC, when the outside temperature is below 59 ºF. 

Public Relation Campaign

The ECU Energy Conservation Committee continued to meet throughout the year and has approved the purchase of switch plate labels to remind occupant leaving a room to turn off lights. This committee is also investigating the value and effectiveness of occupant sensors to be used 
in offices and classrooms to automatically switch off lights when the room is vacant.
