"Mini-Bin" Central Trash Collection

Two University buildings are participating in a pilot program to increase recycling and reduce waste generated by staff and faculty in office setting. The Aiken building (School of Natural Resources) and 622 Main (departments of Purchasing, and Parking & Transportation Services) are part of the program.

Participants were given the following information along with their new "mini-bin."

Say Hello To Your New Trash Can

"Your building is participating in a pilot program to increase recycling and reduce waste generated in UVM offices. During the pilot, this "mini-bin" will replace your regular deskside wastebasket. (This is not a joke!)

The program is simple. You will take your trash, recyclable paper, cans and bottles to the centrally located bins in the hallway and common areas. Continue to bring your containers (cans, glass and plastic bottles) to the centrally located bins. Continue to bring your recyclable paper to the central location, using your personal recycling box. (Extra boxes are available from the Recycling Office.)

Use your new mini-bin for food wrappers, coffee cups, fruit peels, tissues and other waste that cannot be recycled. The bin is small enough to set on your desk, or on the floor. Custodial staff will not empty your mini-bin nor any personal wastebaskets or recycling boxes. They will empty the larger, centrally located bins only.

The mini-bin system is a natural extension to UVM’s recycling program. Most of the waste generated in an office is paper, which should be recycled. When you get right down to it, there is not much trash left over at the end of the day in your deskside wastebasket. The mini-bin will save the University from using several hundred plastic trash bags each year! The mini-bin will help you be aware of the amount of waste you personally generate throughout your day. This system has been implemented successfully in several other universities in North America."

During the program, we will be asking for your feedback. Questions, comments or suggestions should be directed to: Erica Spiegel, Solid Waste/Recycling Coordinator, 284 East Avenue. Phone: 656-3385 or e-mail: recycle@uvm.edu

Thank you for your participation in this innovative program!
