Environmental Sustainability Report

Academics

First offered in fall 2000, the Sustainable University course ENST 100 was taught by Dr. Bill Glaze, Director of the degree-granting Carolina Environmental Program. Staff mentors from the Sustainability Coalition assisted students interested in investigating one of three topics of their choosing – pesticide application and water quality, green building, or environmentally preferable procurement.  Students recommended:

  • following Integrated Pest Management guidelines for the campus proper, athletic fields, and golf course, with the ultimate goal of a pesticide-free university

  • use of LEED standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for all future construction projects

  • expanded purchasing and use of recycled paper, natural personal care products, and organic and locally grown foods

The MBA program at the Kenan Flagler Business School offers a sustainability concentration and is among the top in the country in training future managers to address social and environmental issues, according to 1999 report from the World Resources Institute. In July 2001 the Center for Sustainable Enterprise was created as essentially an institutional promotion for the existing sustainable enterprise initiative. Continuing education is also provided to senior executives in business, government and civil society. In partnership with the Sustainable Enterprise Academy based at York University in Ontario, a weeklong course in November 2001 will offer participants the vision, education, tools and support necessary to champion sustainable development in their organizations. From Nov. 1-4, 2001, Net Impact (formerly Students for Business Responsibility) will meet in Chapel Hill for its annual conference.
