University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Environmental Sustainability Report
Outreach
Communicating sustainability goals to the broadest possible campus constituency is essential to generating support and recruiting partners for implementation. The Sustainability Coalition has thus far prepared two annual reports on its activities. Both are accessible on the
Coalition Web site. Jim Mergner, Deputy for Facilities Services, presented the highlights of the first report at the Clean and Green North Carolina event in Raleigh in April 2000. The second annual report was submitted to Vice Chancellor Nancy Suttenfield at an outside Earth Day event held on campus.
The coalition’s Web site is being redesigned to be more interactive and offer more robust content. Articles on the Sustainability Coalition have appeared in both campus newspapers. The Daily Tarheel is targeted primarily to students and the Gazette is targeted primarily to faculty and staff. A four-page insert on sustainability and recycling appeared in the
Sept. 12, 2001, issue of the Gazette. A PowerPoint presentation on the coalition has been presented to the Employee Forum and others. Presentations to interdisciplinary faculty committees and department heads accelerated in fall 2001. Partnerships with student environmental groups are also promoted.
The sustainability listserv provides a communication network for the most active and interested participants. A green building video series was initiated in fall
2001, and a poster presentation is being prepared. Handouts and brochures are also available and more are under development.
Campus-wide education is needed on topics ranging from green building, to environmentally preferable purchasing, to new stormwater management practices. Links are also being forged at the local,
state and national levels. UNC – Chapel Hill is a member of Campus Ecology, the Clean Cities Coalition, and
N.C. Project Green. It is a signatory of the Talloires Declaration, developed by University Leaders for a Sustainable Future.
Sustainability Coalition members have participated in conferences organized by Second Nature and the Ball State Greening the Campus events.
