Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, Feb 1996 v10 n1 p40(1) Discussion. (response to Paul S.H. Poh and Bengt B. Broms, Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, vol. 9, February 1995)(Slope Stabilization Using Old Rubber Tires and Geotextiles) Imad A. Basheer; Yacoub M. Najjar. Abstract: The use of rubber tires in stabilizing soils would gradually solve the problem of disposing used tires. Consumers in the US throw away 237,000,000 tires annually. Fourteen-percent of these used tires are recycled as fuel, 5% are used as rubberized asphalt, and another 10% are used for erosion control structures and highway barriers. The tires are used together with geotextiles that are wrapped at the slope face. However, the standard practice is to use the tires as the face without wrapping the geotextiles against the soil.
