Pyro Technic

COMPANY/LOCATION: Pyro Technic, Louisville, Tennessee
PRODUCT: Carbon-carbon composites for industrial uses including furnace liners and heating elements
ANNUAL SALES:    $125,000
EMPLOYEES: 3

SITUATION:   Pyro Technic manufactures a carbon-carbon composite material for industrial applications. The manufacturing method used by Pyro Technic produces the composite without an autoclave, which means that the product costs substantially less than the high-carbon composites used for aircraft components and is, therefore, a more affordable product for the private sector. The company experienced a problem with delamination during the curing cycle of the product.

PROJECT:       Engineers from the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology visited the company, examined the manufacturing facility, recommended a different type of resin, and suggested corrections in curing cycle temperatures that eliminated the delamination problem.

Upon instituting the recommendations, Pyro Technic had a salable product immediately

RESULTS:       "One visit solved 60 percent of my problem, and the product keeps getting better because I keep consulting with ORCMT. I had been working by myself, but the service extended to Pyro Technic has allowed me to add two employees. To my business, it has meant more than just savings: it has allowed me to really launch the business," said Ben Evans, president and founder of Pyro Technic.
